Xavier is a graduate!

Last Wednesday was the day Xavier scheduled his final GED test. He walked into The Learning Center with confidence and said, "Today, I'm going to be a graduate.". Xavier would tell you that studying for his final GED section (math) was a struggle for over a year. Xavier was determined to not give up and with dedication he did indeed become a graduate last Wednesday. Xavier said he couldn't have done it without the encouragement from The Learning Center, his teachers, and God. He said coming to The Learning Center helped him realize he needed God and needed to focus on his spiritual health. We are so proud of Xavier for not giving up when it was hard. Immediately after he passed his final GED section, Xavier enrolled in college. Xavier, Congratulations on this huge accomplishment and we will continue to pray for you as you begin your college journey.

Congrats, Dennishia!

Dennishia recently passed three sections of the GED (Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies). Her hard work and determination are moving her forward. When a student passes a section of the GED they get to put a check mark on the wall. We look forward to seeing Dennishia pass the math section and get that final check mark on the wall. Congratulations, Dennishia!

Mini-Term in June

We will host a mini-term in June for our students. Summer is a hard season and it’s easy to forget what you’ve learned so we give an extra three week push to allow our students some extra study time and to acclimate potential new students to our setting before we begin our next full semester in August. Our Summer mini-term will be held June 15-July 1. If you, or anyone you know, might be interested in attending our classes beginning with this term, please contact Ryann at info@bhamlearning.org.

Congratulations, Ericka!

Late last month we had another student complete her GED! Ericka is a hard-working single mom. She was able to pass three sections from her home, with just a little guidance from our staff on how to proceed. She passed her final section at The Learning Center on Wednesday, March 24. She’s been working at her job for years and hopes with her GED that she’ll be able to go back to school and be promoted within her current company, giving her the ability to better provide for herself and her son. Congratulations, Ericka! We’re excited for you and to see what happens in your future!

Save the Date! 2021 Spring Graduation

One of my (Ryann’s) favorite days of each year is Graduation day. Our students missed the opportunity in high school to put on a cap and gown and proudly march through an auditorium and to be cheered for as they walked across a stage to accept their diploma. Because we believe, wholeheartedly, that our students deserve to be celebrated, we like to give them that opportunity. This year we will host our Spring Graduation Ceremony in the Dawson North Chapel on Tuesday, May 25 at 6:00pm. Please make plans to join us to celebrate our students and their accomplishments!

Welcome New Students!

As our semesters get going we often find that life happens for our students. This means we might begin a semester with 48 students and by the third or fourth week we have between 35 and 40 left on our rosters. It’s part of working with adults who are hard workers. They often have to drop out of school to prioritize work or their families. As a result, we allowed new students who assessed with us in the middle of the semester to get started in classes this April, halfway through the semester. We decided to go ahead and get them rolling, working towards their GED, rather than waiting on our next mini-term to begin in June. We’re excited to have added ten new students this April and are looking forward to seeing the progress they will make towards their goal of earning a GED!
