Student Intakes

This afternoon we will host our next round of assessments for potential students. We use the information from the assessments to determine which class students should be placed in and how we can best teach them what they need to know without making them sit through lessons on what they already know. We’re always excited to meet potential new students and look forward to that opportunity again next week!

Happy Easter

He is risen! Thankful today, and every day, for our Savior, who conquered death to give us life. We are also praying today, and every day, for Christ’s love to be known and felt by everyone who steps through our doors at The Learning Center.

Congratulations, Zach!

Last month we celebrated with another new graduate, Zach, as he completed his final section of the test. Zach came to us with all the knowledge he needed to pass the GED, he just needed a little guidance on how to get through the process … and he got through it! Of course, when you’re as determined as Zach, you have the support of parents and your boss, and you know that when you’re done you’ll be able to take the first step towards enlisting in the Army (Zach’s next goal), it makes things a little easier. We are so excited for Zach and hope to be able to celebrate with him as he continues to crush his future goals just like he did the GED!

Spring Break

We will not have classes this week at The Learning Center. We follow the Birmingham City School system and they are out this week for Spring Break so we are too. We hope everyone enjoys the week off but we’re looking forward to being back the first week of April and finishing out this semester!

Student Progress Report

Our student, Nissa, first began classes with us in Fall of 2020. She, her husband, and her sister-in-law have all attended classes with us for 1.5 semesters now. When they all arrived her husband and SIL both said, “Nissa will do this. She can do it.” We’ve been sure to encourage them that they’re fully capable of doing this as well, but their predictions were correct. Nissa has passed her first two sections of the GED and has just two to go! We are so proud of her hard work and look forward to celebrating her continued success with her!

New Semester Starts Today!

Today marks the beginning of our 12-week semester. Over the next twelve weeks, students will attend classes one day a week four hours each day. They will study Math, Language Arts, Bible Study, and either Science or Social Studies. We are excited to see what all our students will learn over the next twelve weeks and how God will be glorified through their hard work and the service of our volunteers.

Happy Birthday to Us!

The Learning Center opened its doors for our first classes four years ago today. Being Valentine’s Day, I made the joke all day that “we love learning at The Learning Center!” Praise the Lord, that didn’t scare away every student and volunteer! Over the past four years, we have had 14 students earn their GED and have begun countless relationships with other students and instructors. We are so thankful for this ministry opportunity and the way it serves our community and, Lord willing, brings glory to God. Thank you, to everyone who has supported us over the past four years. We can’t wait to see what the Lord has in store for our future!

Intake Results

We have had potential students completing assessments over the past two weeks. We are excited to get them started in classes for our next 12-week semester, beginning next week! Please be in prayer for both our new and returning students as we are getting started.

Another section passed!

We weren’t holding classes in December of 2020 but that didn’t stop Amy, one of our most determined students. She had scored well enough on GED practice tests that we knew she would be able to pass her Language and Social Studies tests. However, something always happened when she took the Language test, she’d miss passing by one or two points. Most of our students hit a wall at that point. They quit and give up. Not Amy. It fueled her, fired her up, and made her more determined than ever. So, even without classes happening, she walked through our door multiple times a week. She continued to study. She continued to press forward and, praise the Lord, she passed her first section of the test! We are so proud of Amy and know this is just the beginning of what the Lord has in store for her future.
