Wishing all of our Moms – students, volunteers, and staff – a Happy Mother’s Day today. Heaven knows we are thankful for these women in our lives and are thankful for the opportunity to celebrate them today!
"Time Off"
When we’re not hosting classes, our students and staff are still hard at work. The Learning Center is open Tuesdays-Thursdays and we welcome students who want to come work on their own or meet with tutors. We love the dedication of our students to continue working even when classes aren’t meeting.
Volunteer Orientation on May 9
If you would be interested in learning more about The Learning Center and possible volunteer opportunities with us, please join us at Volunteer Orientation this Thursday, May 9 at noon. You can let us know you’d like to come by completing the form found here.
Spring Mini-Term
Our Spring mini-term ended yesterday. We want to express our gratitude to the students who worked so hard over the past three weeks and to our instructors who continue to so graciously give their time and talents to The Learning Center.
We will host two Summer mini-terms in June (11-27) and July (9-25). If you are interested in attending classes or volunteering, please contact us and let us know!
Student Testimony: Karla
In our exit interview with recent graduate, Karla, we asked her to describe her experience at The Learning Center. Her response was that when she came here, she felt she had a purpose … attending classes here gave her hope towards fulfilling her dreams. The work that we are doing here, that you are supporting, is giving purpose to your neighbors and brothers and sisters-in-Christ. From all of us, students and staff, thank you for this gift.
GED Sections Passed in March
We are so proud of the hard work our students are putting in at The Learning Center this semester! In March, students passed two sections of the GED! That brings the total of sections passed in 2019 to seven! This is not an easy accomplishment, despite how easy our students are making it look. Our classes won’t resume until Tuesday, April 16 but we know our students will continue to make great strides this Spring and look forward to celebrating with them!
Graduation - You're Invited!
On Monday, May 20, we will host a Graduation Ceremony at the Dawson Family of Faith North Chapel (1114 Oxmoor Road, Birmingham, AL 35209) at 6:00pm. We are looking forward to celebrating the achievements of all of the graduates from both our Homewood and Avondale locations. Please save the date and plan to join us!
Spring (mini-term) has sprung!
On Tuesday of this week we resumed an abbreviated version of our classes, known as a mini-term. New and returning students attended Math and Reading classes. We host mini-terms so we can roll new students into classes, without asking them to wait until our full fall semester begins in August. In 2019 we will host this Spring mini-term, two Summer mini-terms (one in June and one in July), and a fall mini-semester in November.
Math Instructors Needed
If you can solve the math problem 2+2, we could use your help at The Learning Center during our Spring mini-semester! Given our growing population of students, we need some assistance on Tuesday and/or Thursday mornings from 9:30-11:00. If you are interested, please contact Ryann Mitchell. (Even if it’s outside your comfort zone, just come give it a try! The Lord can work outside your comfort zone!)
New Graduate!
We have another reason to celebrate! One of our students, Karla, passed the Math section of the GED last month. As a result, she has now earned her GED and her time here is complete! We will miss having Karla with us in class but we are so proud of her accomplishments and look forward to seeing the work she will do in the future!
